Obtaining Information using Fishing & Shooting Questions.
I am a web design company and a client has
come to me with their idea to create an online clothing business. These are ten questions I would ask them
BEFORE I create a draft sight for them.
1.
Describe the type of clothing business you
see yourself as. (fishing)
2.
How much money do you want to spend on this site?
(shooting)
3.
How much involvement do you want in the
maintenance of this site? (fishing)
4.
List 5 descriptive words you would describe
your desired look of the site. (shooting)
5.
Will you ship overseas? (shooting)
6.
What type of site do you like the look of? (fishing)
7.
Do you need someone to take photos or will
you supply them? (shooting)
8.
Do you need the written aspects of this site
done or will you do them? (shooting)
9.
Do you need a logo designed? (shooting)
10.
Who do you mainly sell clothes to?(shooting)

Hero Shots
I took a photo of some clinkers on a white background then laid over the top some sexy cursive writing. I re painted the clinkers the same brown as the background to give the website continuity. I then gave it a slight gradient so it wasn't too harsh.
For this I used an image I had on my I phone I took of my house when it was for sale. I desaturated the image, used the history brush to re open the red bits. The greyscale works well with the limited palette of the original web page. I kept the same simple font that was given in the example as it is very similar to the realestate.com one.

Web image formats
new submission, makes the title have more contrast with the background and stand out more.
I uploaded the Jpeg as I could tell no difference in quality while viewing each image on the screen.
I adjusted each layer to be slightly opaque to try and subdue some of the strong colours and images.
The background is slightly green to enhance the living sus- tainably. The images in the foreground are in greater focus to create depth and hierarchy.
I have deliberately separated the sus and tainably as a mild protest. I have used the Hobart City as a back ground layer and I am poking fun at just how unsustainably we actually do live. If we were truly conscientious of living sustainably the city would be filled with high rises instead of constantly spreading our urban sprawl into the outer suburbs.

Combining Images using Layer Masks
I am really happy with learning this new tool. I have had little to do with masks and feel like I have a better understanding of how they work. the alignment tool is also great. This is a photo of me being a poser in my office.

Making backgrounds for web pages
I enjoy this one above because of the powerful image. The website works well because it doesn't try and compete with the image, rather the links work harmoniously.
Due to the limited colour palette of this forest scene the background image becomes more of a design element than an image. A Shape. This, combined with a good colour palette are successful.
Like the image above the colour palette is similar to the image. It is limited and complimentary.
3:
Some images will simply not work when tiling. I found that organic forms and textures lend themselves well rather than figurative or man made.Taking time to blend edges can be time consuming but made easier with good image selection.

Image Compression Experiment
While the pixel sizes are the same, the description of each pixel creates size. So when there are a lot of the same colour or shape then the description can be less extensive.
In order to maximise this for a photo shoot that required low file sizes you would decrease distractions in the background and keep things simple.
For a car logo web design a lot of good web designs have the same colour background as the car. A more detailed and larger image would include the car in the street with a busy background.
the image above is 25kb
the image above is 59kb, well over double the size of the more simple image,
Exporing Photoshop's Adjustment Layers
Above is a photo I took at around midday in low light. Again I adjusted the vibrancy and saturation which increased the colours. For a web layout this is more than suitable as it is hard to tell that some detail is lost.

Learning Task 4 | Cropping an Image
Change the composition and add dynamic movement by moving the subject out of dead center.
Though I enjoyed the stable composition originally, the image works just as well with the can coming right to the front. I also enjoy the 'graffiti world' in the background out of focus.

Emphasize part of the image to allow it to dominate the hierarchy.
The original image lacks focus and needs some hierarchy, by focussing on the paint cup with the brush I have done this effectively.
Change the orientation by making a horizontal aspect image into a vertical aspect image.
There is too much white space in this image, by cropping out some of the sky I have created a more interesting focused image. Also, by changing the landscape format normally associated with outdoor snaps, I have given the image an interesting dynamic. By using portrait format it give the inanimate object life and human like qualities.
Change the perspective of an image; take an exaggerated perspective photo and make it "straight" again.
Well this is a pretty cool tool I havent used before. I have CS5 so it was a little more difficult to find but it is still there. I was amazed at how much it looks legit. Nice one.
Change the compostion so it reflects "The Rule of Thirds".
Originally the image has too much brick work on the right. By cropping to enforce the rule of thirds (though only slightly) it makes for a more aesthetically pleasing image.
Photoshop | Learning Task 3 | Flatbed Scanning
A fairly grungy self portait. I call it Rank Selfie.
I think it tells a story of a bad ass artist. This may be an exaggeration. Ok it is.
I am actually a marsh mellow.

Original 4.8MB

after saving as 60 quality JPEG in was 1.8MB
This pic at original size is far too big, You are only seeing approx a 1/4 of the image. On a slow bandwidth it may also be slow to upload and is unnecessary

The image is now 40KB

This is a far more suitable size for web layouts. As far as my lazy eye can tell the quality is still there and I can see the entire image.

Initial poster sketch and final poster design
I am quite happy with my final design. I have tried to stretch myself using unconventional colours and a layout. Its minimal but considered. It is graphicy and modern. It doesnt scream "Chickenfeed heaps of savings" it is more sophisticated like Sue Hall's shop. I opted to go for a slightly altered logo than my final one as the poster required line work not heavy blocks of white.
